Note: most meetings were held via email or Elluminate

Meeting Date & Time / Meeting Method / Those Present or Involved Summary of Meetings and Team Activity

09-08-10 to 09-27-10

Time: varied

Method: a series of emails
Present: Eric, Eddie, Marni, Jessica, Sandra

For a period of 2 weeks, we exchanged information to determine the best day and time for team meetings.  Eventually, we determined that Monday evenings at 6:00p (right before our class meeting) would be the best time to meet together.

09-27-10

Time: 7:00 to 7:30 (last part of class)

Method: Elluminate (Main Hall)

Present: Eric, Eddie, Marni, Jessica

After Dr. Butler's instruction and class discussion, some informal discussion about the team projects led to Team 3 members generating an idea of what to do as a team project.  We talked about focusing on new students to online learning.  This served as a catalyst and point of team motivation.

10-04-10

Time: 6:00 to 7:00

Method: Elluminate (Team 3 Room)

Present: Eric, Eddie, Marni

  • Reviewed the ADDIE model in light of project ideas
  • Idea #1: what's it like to be a new student to online learning
  • Discussed our own experiences with online classes
  • Identified a common problem many students encounter during online classes -- inadequate Internet speed / reliable issues
  • Agreed that Ed-Tech students may have trouble but tend to be better equipped to handle tech-related issues
  • Asked a key question, "What is the experience of less tech-saavy students who take online classes?"
  • Acknowledged that we can't fix or prevent Internet-related problems so we narrowed our attention to what we could do.
  • Considered the idea that some general training and specific step-by-step instructions might help new students
  • Discussed possible delivery methods (i.e. wiki, web page) but decided it's too early to decide right now
  • Decided to research Idea #1 some more (Eric and Marni agreed to researching this topic and related areas)
  • Idea #2: the problem of teachers on sick/maternity leave and how to improve experience for left-behind students
  • Kicked around ideas of how technology might offer solutions to classes with teachers out for several weeks
  • Ideas included pre-recorded video or audio that subs play for class, streaming video via web cam, etc.
  • Shared concerns that this project might be too complex unless we can narrow it down some more
  • 2nd idea did capture our imagination so we decided to research it some more (Eddie agreed to research this one)
  • Concluded meeting with idea of inviting remaining members not at meeting to join us on one of these current ideas

Assigned Projects:

Due 10/17/10

Team members researched possible project ideas and posted findings here before next meeting.

Project Ideas / Research Reports (Suggestion: each of us add brief comments to this section BEFORE the next meeting)

Eddie: Idea #2 web links:  http://kcaise.edublogs.org/2009/01/28/teacher-uses-webcam-to-deliver-lessons/

Not a lot found on the Internet. I suggest we pass on this project idea due to a complex set of needs for this problem.

Eric: OK all...a few thoughts: first, we need to define what we mean by "broadband"...not so easy:

http://www.circleid.com/posts/defining_broadband/

http://arstechnica.com/telecom/news/2009/09/big-cable-to-fcc-dont-define-broadband-by-its-actual-speed.ars

Next, I found some interesting stats on internet usage, but could only drill down to state level (in 2007, 48% of TX had "broadband" access)http://www.internetworldstats.com/am/USA_Internet_Usage_2007.pdf

World Stats on the rise of broadband access/usage were interesting too:

http://www.itu.int/net/pressoffice/stats/2010/09/index.aspx

http://www.internetworldstats.com/am/us.htm

I'm still thinking we create a checklist for success...and include all those steps we take to make online learning possible.  A starting point for that:

- Wired vs. Wireless...pros and cons of each.  Testing your connection speed...having a backup connection plan in place

- Managing Pop Ups, Cookies

- Overcoming Firewall Settings, Proxys

- Being familiar with policies related to school-related internet usage on at-work networks

- Basic system requirements for Elluminate, Camtasia in terms of processor speed, RAM, headset/mic

- Familiarity with your school's policies and procedures for accessing online classes (I'm thinking here of UTMB's Internet Security Policy Patrol, or whatever it was called)

- Basic wiki skills, emailing individuals and groups (distribution lists), manipulating attachments, creating meeting times

- Syncing phones to email accts for timely responses and communication (not sure we want to deal with this!)

- Updating Adobe and Java

- Troubleshooting audio for Elluminate

Haven't particularly ordered these but wanted to at least get us a working list started.  More later!

Jessica: Some of the issues that are above would be best served by creating tutorials. In fact, I know that several of the issues that are above, do have tutorials already created. Maybe it would be a good idea to have one central location for each of these issues? It would be a good idea to create a wiki or site that was set up specifically for a new student.

Marni:

Sandra:

10-18-10

Time: 6:00 to 6:30 (before class)

Method: Elluminate (Team 3 Room)

Present: Eric, Eddie, Marni, Jessica

Objectives before next meeting:

1. Choose University to research clicker usage - make sure there is no duplication with other members

2. Research a paper/article on clickers

3. Create list of benefits with research to back up each benefit

4. Research alternative clicker methods

5. Research student responses to clickers

Assigned Projects:

Due 10/24/10

Each team member will research clickers and post their findings here before next meeting.

Eric:

1) Review deadine schedule

2) Assign roles

3) Assign Camtasia Tutorial Topics

Answer these:

Your wiki should contain at least the following components:
  • problem to be addressed,
  • relevance to education,
  • conceptual background/research,
  • multimedia tutorial from each team member,
  • necessary resources,
  • references or bibliography that includes at least 12 scholarly sources, briefly annotated.

Team, we need to make our next meeting count and get our documentation finished so all we have left is Camtasia projects and practice sessions. After reading through the Project 4 assignments more carefully, I think we need to reformat our wiki pages. I am pretty good at formatting so I will start on it some time today so it will be closer to our needs by the time of our meeting.  - Eddie

Hey you guys - let me know what you want me to do. Give me any assisngment and it will get done. I was trying to stay on long enough for the meeting but we have to go to my husband's bday dinner. Are we meeting tomorrow before class?

I modified today's scheduled meeting time to simply a research findings and comments item. In the spirit of collaboration, this approach may be essential to our busy schedules. I think we all need to meet at 6pm tomorrow to review where we are and what are next step should be. : )

Jessica, you must bleed burnt-orange more than I do...lol. Besides the OSU web link I already posted, I am also going to follow-up with Abilene Christian University since I know they have embraced interactive technologies in the classroom in recent years (a friend of mine is a course designer at ACU and works with their distance learning program). Plus, I did my first master's degree at ACU 18 years ago (that makes me sound old, huh?).
